  • An accident in the Central Coast region of New South Wales has sparked debate
  • A ute illegally overtook a car and brake-checked them causing an accident
  • Facebook users are debating whether the ute or the motorist was in the wrong

A ute driver who overtook a motorist on a wet road before merging into the left-hand lane and causing an accident has sparked a furious debate online.

Dashcam footage shows the driver of the Holden Commodore overtaking in a right-hand-turn-only road in Lisarow, on the Central Coast region of New South Wales.

The ute driver merges into the left-hand lane before braking hard and causing an accident.

Later, the ute driver was charged with three traffic offences and had to fork out for the other motorist’s repairs.

But not everyone on social media could agree on who was at fault.

A ute driver who overtook a motorist on a wet road before merging into the left-hand lane and causing an accident has sparked a furious debate online

Some Facebook users defended the ute driver, arguing that the motorist with the dashcam had plenty of time to stop.

‘What part of the braking lights couldn’t you see…. the flashing or the solid?’ a person said.

Another person added, ‘zero effort made to stop and avoid the accident.’

‘What didn’t the car behind have breaks. You could stop a loaded road train in that time,’ one Facebook user said.

Others simply branded him an ‘idiot’.

Other people on Facebook argued that the ute driver was at fault because they illegally overtook the motorist before ‘brake checking’.

‘He clearly overtook illegally then slammed the brakes on. That is dangerous driving,’ one Facebook user said.

Another person said: ‘Brake checking is illegal. Ute driver is a knob, and rightfully being held accountable for the accident.’

‘If you brake-check, you’re a dead set flog,’ one user said.

Some argued that the dashcam driver did not have enough time to stop.

‘It is a 12 second video,’ one said.

‘Three seconds is all it took from brake light to crash. Plus dash probably makes it look further away than it actually is – hence the wider gap between the next car from them. Stop being d***s and blaming the dashcam driver.’

Another said:  ‘Hindsight warriors out in force with the usual ”should of kept distance, could of been avoided.”’
