Astonishing footage has emerged of a slippery passenger hitchhiking a free ride on a car bonnet.

Rebecca Mills was heading home from a weekend camping trip with her husband David, their children and the family dog near Cairns in Queensland’s far north when they suddenly realised a snake had hitched a ride.

A reptile crawled out from under the car bonnet to make a surprise appearance, much to the shock of the family and passing motorists travelling in the opposite direction, including a busload of tourists.

The sneaky serpent also shocked passing motorists

The Mills family were heading home when they realised they had an extra passenger on board

‘You’ve heard of SNAKES ON THE PLANE … well we had SNAKES ON THE RANGE,’ Ms Mills captioned the incredible footage on Facebook.

The family’s priceless reactions to spotting the snake can be heard in the background of the footage taken along the Kennedy Highway at Kuranda Range. 

The reactions of Ms Mills and her children varied from hysterical laughter to absolute horror and panic fearing the reptile could be venomous, while Mr Mills remained calm and unfazed. 

The footage has since attracted 100,000 views

‘It’s a tree snake. I’ve got him off,’ Mr Mills says as he tries to find a spot to pull over.

‘What’s he doing now? He’s looking at me. He’s going to get done by the wipers.’ 

The video ends with Mr Mills getting out of the car to retrieve a stick before calmly and safely removing the snake from the bonnet. 

Adding to the chaos, the family’s dog Marley had also been sick in the car just prior to the shock discovery. 

The 90 second video has since gone viral, attracted more than 100,000 views, almost 2,000 shares and hundreds of comments within 24 hours.

Comments ranged from horror to awe and amusement.

‘I’ve seen some crossing the road but never stopped to offer them a lift,’ one person commented.

Some were left terrified by the footage. 

Another added: ‘I don’t think we would have made it home.. I have a phobia of snakes.’ 

Some viewers found the footage entertaining.  

‘You spoiled his ride. He had family waiting at the bottom,’ one person joked.
