Inmate killed inside UNLOCKED prison cell in Sydney

  • The 54-year-old was inside his unlocked cell on Friday when he was assaulted
  • The man reportedly had no connection with the criminal underworld 
  • He was transported to Westmead Hospital after 2pm but later died   

A prisoner has died after being assaulted by another inmate inside his New South Wales jail cell. 

The 54-year-old was inside his unlocked cell on Friday when he was set upon at Silverwater Prison, west of Sydney, shortly after 2pm. 

‘At 3.30pm police were called to a correctional centre in Silverwater after a 54-year-old man was assaulted by another inmate,’ a NSW Police spokesman told Daily Telegraph.

The man reportedly had no connection with the criminal underworld and was serving time for his first offence. 

He was being incarcerated for a violence-related crime, and was the sole occupant of the cell where the incident occurred.

The man was transported to Westmead Hospital where he later passed away.

An investigation into the incident and his cause of death has been launched by Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police.
