Inmate stole and smuggled out documents for prison plans

An inmate who was moved from Parklea Jail last week smuggled stolen documents that contained sensitive information about the prison’s plans to build a new maximum security wing.

The confidential plans were seized last week at Silverwater Correctional Complex, in Sydney’s western suburbs.

One of the documents showed details of an office for an area manager, while another was for demountable buildings.

‘The prisoner didn’t have the plans to do an arts course, he had them because he was up to no good’, told a source to the Daily Telegraph.

Other sources explained that the secret documents could have been used to plan an escape, smuggle contraband, or tap in to plumbing and phones.

Peter Severin, NSW Corrective Services Commissioner, explained that the actual ‘off-the-shelf demountable’  would have been temporarily set for site security staff and removed before the new wing became operational.

‘There is no inmate access to this demountable building and no security concerns whatsoever,’ he added.

Former Grafton jail governor, John Heffernan, explained to the Telegraph that inmates were sometimes involved with helping builders and it was possible the man had picked up the plans and taken them — but that this should never have happened.

‘How could this inmate walk out of a prison with these documents?’ he asked.

Opposition justice spokesman Guy Zangari said the new wing, which will house 500 maximum security prisoners, had been compromised.

“This is beyond a joke,” Mr Zangari said.

The contract is now up for tender as operator Geo Group struggles to retain it.

It is the latest security breach at the correctional center as The state government has just ordered a full parliamentary inquiry into Parklea jail amid allegations of corruption and drug trafficking.
