Iowa man builds 14-foot-tall ‘A Christmas Story’ leg lamp

A married couple have upped their holiday spirit in their own, bizarre way, by channeling a famous Christmas movie in their decorations.

Tom Gross and his wife Tina from Des Moines, Iowa, have created a 14-foot replica of the famous leg lamp from the 1983 movie A Christmas Story.

‘Nothing says Christmas like the soft glow of electric sex,’ Tom said to ABC News, quoting from the film.

‘It’s all scrap stuff we had around the house,’ Tina said to ABC.

Gross first built the lamp when he still lived in Illinois, and it’s the second year the lamp has been placed in front of their Iowa house.

However, the couple has had to replace portions of the lamp twice due to strong winds.

‘You don’t want to spend a lot of time or money on it because the wind blows terribly here in Iowa,’ Tom said.

‘This one is more durable,’ he said about the second version. ‘People either realize what it is and freak out, or don’t know why I have a leg in my yard. If they get it, they throw the flashers on and get out of the car and have a picture taken with it.

‘It is really awesome to see people enjoy it that much.’

In A Christmas Story, a lamp in the shape of a leg is delivered to a family in a large box reading ‘fragile’, to which the father famously says ‘fra-gee-leh, must be Italian!’ The father had won the lamp as an award.

While the father loves his new lamp, his wife isn’t so sure and frequently tries to turn it off when he isn’t looking.
