A militant vegan accused of stealing a piglet and a $1,500 friesian calf refused to eat while behind bars because the prison menu doesn’t cater to his diet.

James Warden, 25, allegedly stole the cow from Western Australian farm last year, claiming to rescue the ‘sick’ animal from mistreatment before it was later returned unharmed.

He is also accused of a taking a dead piglet from a piggery and putting it on display outside shops as a protest in Belmont, New South Wales in September 2018.

Warden fronted Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday, charged with three counts of trespass, and two counts each of stealing and aggravated burglary.

As he waited for his bail paperwork to be completed Warden was remanded for 48-hours in Perth’s Hakea Prison.

Warden told 7NEWS he had to starve during his two days behind bars as the jail didn’t cater for his vegan diet.

‘Some of them just said, “go and eat some meat” and that kind of thing,’ he said.

‘The experience I had was nowhere near as bad as what animals are going through – they are suffering daily, and I only had to put up with 48 hours in custody.’

Despite his rough time behind bars, the vegan activist is determined to continue his campaigning in the hopes of making changes to animal ethics.

Warden was fined in March for trespassing and live streaming it on social media and has several co-accused ranging in age from 21 to 36.

After Warden allegedly stole the calf, it was taken to an animal rescue farm in Waroona before it was returned to its owner in good health.

Police previously said all the crimes happened between August and February at Western Australian properties in Nambeelup, Hopeland, West Pinjarra, Benger and Mundijong.

Warden has since been bailed but with strict conditions, including a $10,000 personal undertaking and $5000 surety.

He also cannot possess a passport, must report weekly to police and stay away from farms.

Warden is scheduled to face Mandurah Magistrates Court on May 3.
