Jaycee Duggard speaks out to support Elizabeth Smart

Jaycee Duggard, 38, spoke out on Tuesday to support fellow kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart’s fight to stop her captor’s release from prison

Jaycee Duggard has spoken out to support fellow kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart’s pleas not to let one of her captors out of prison tomorrow.

Duggard, 38, was taken captive when she was 11 and was held against her will by Phillip and Nancy Garrido in a tent in a backyard in Antioch, California, for 18 years until she was freed in 2009.

Phillip had already spent time behind bars for kidnap and rape and had been let out early at the time.

On Tuesday, Duggard begged Utah’s parole board, which has granted the release of Wanda Barzee, one of Smart’s abductors, to consider her case and stop the now 72-year-old woman from walking the streets again.

‘I feel deeply for what Elizabeth is going through knowing this dangerous person is free to walk the street.

‘Believe Elizabeth when she says this woman is a threat to society.

‘Wasn’t a lesson learned from my case, when Phillip was released from prison early in his first rape and kidnapping conviction?   He was then free to take me with his wife’s help.’

Duggard added that Barzee, who helped her husband Brian David Mitchell snatch Smart from her home when she was 14 and then watched as he raped her ‘every day’ for nine months, was ‘just as guilty’ as he was.

Duggard had two children in captivity by her rapist.

In 2010, she won a settlement of $20million from the State of California which had missed several opportunities to save her.

Smart, now 30, was just 14 when Wanda Barzee and her one-time husband Brian David Mitchell snatched Smart from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Mitchell knew her because he had been hired by her family to do handiwork at their home.

For nine months, the religion-obsessed couple kept Smart tied up in the woods where Mitchell subjected her to daily rapes and death threats.

She was eventually rescued when a stranger saw the three of them in the street and recognized the pair from an episode of America’s Most Wanted.

Barzee was granted parole last Tuesday after spending 15 years behind bars. It was a sudden reversal on the Utah Parole Board’s earlier decision that the seven years she spent in jail awaiting trial should not count towards her sentence.

The 72-year-old will be released on September 19 and will be under federal supervision for five years.

Smart said the decision was ‘incomprehensible’ and that she was ‘surprised and disappointed’ by it.

At a press conference last week, she described her as still being a danger to society, saying: ‘She is a woman who had six children yet could co-conspire to kidnap a 14-year-old girl, and not only sit next to her while being raped but encourage her husband to continue to rape me.

‘So do I believe she’s dangerous? Yes.’

On Tuesday, she told in an interview how Barzee touched her while she was being raped and once laughed when she vomited after being forced to drink alcohol.

‘I know just how bad she really can be. She would encourage him to rape me.

‘She would sit right next to me like the side of her body would be touching me,’ Smart told CBS.

‘While he was raping me. I mean, she was right there. So I mean, there were no secrets. She knew what was going on.

‘She was the kind of woman that — she was just evil and twisted,’ she added.

Barzee will be under federal supervision for five years. In 2010, seven years after Smart was rescued, Barzee pleaded guilty to kidnapping.

Duggard was forced to live between small rooms in her abductors’ back yard and a tent.

Years into her captivity, they confidently took her out, along with her two daughters, and paraded them as though they were siblings.

Duggard and her daughters were saved after Garrido took them to the University of Berkeley asking if could host a seminar about how he had cured his criminal behaviors.

It sparked officials’ concern because Jaycee and her daughters were pale and malnourished.

Garrido and his wife are still behind bars. He will die there and she will likely never get out.

She was sentenced to 36 years imprisonment in 2011. Now 63, she has another 29 years of her sentence before she is eligible for parole.

Mitchell, who orchestrated Smart’s kidnapping, will also die in prison.

His wife is now 72 and Smart fears she is a danger because she still loves him.

At her parole hearing in June, Smart begged the board not to let her out because she still carries around a book of his which contains religious notes and musings.
