Kaia Gerber covers Vogue Italia August 2018 and talks about her mother Cindy Crawford

Nearly 30 years after her mother Cindy Crawford first graced the cover of Vogue Italia in 1989, Kaia Gerber has earned herself the coveted spot for the magazine’s latest issue.

The 16-year-old poses on the front of the publication wearing in a pink suit, wearing her hair slicked back and her make-up natural.

Inside, the young model wears more designer outfits and talks about growing up as the daughter of a supermodel.

Still just 16, this is hardly Kaia’s first time appearing in one of Vogue’s international issues. In fact, she shared a cover of Vogue Paris with her mother in 2016, and got her own Vogue Paris cover in February of this year.

Celebrating her first Vogue Italia cover, though, Kaia is a natural in a series of colorful and patterned suits.

Kaia turns 17 in September, and has had quite a busy year since turning 16 — the age when she was finally old enough to walk the runway.

But she insists she’s always been really into fashion, and would experiment with her style at school before she could do it for the cameras.

She told the magazine that she has long had an ‘instinctive relationship with fashion’ because of her family.

‘I thought it was fun to show people what I felt based on what I was wearing,’ she said. ‘And then obviously there was my mother.

‘When she was getting ready to go out in the evening, I followed her into her closet to see what clothes she would choose… I was bewitched by her beauty,’ she went on.

‘You will not believe it, but as a child I did not know she was famous. I did not even know she was a model. For me it was only my mother, and today it’s still a bit like that. Of course she has her life, but she is one of those people who can never take work home. Home is home and work is work.’

She also grew up around the other ‘supers,’ like Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Helena Christensen.

‘They encouraged and supported me before I knew who they were for others,’ she said. ‘The fact is that, like my mother, they too were different in the private, down-to-earth. A quality that I admire very much.’

She added: ‘I grew up close to very strong women who inspired me. The new wave of feminism brought a union of intentions I had never seen before. At work I became aware of a thousand ways in which women really began to support themselves, to help each other and to collaborate.’

Kaia also shared some of the advice she’s been given by her mother — who, first and foremost, told her to always be aware of her good fortune.

That’s especially when it comes to travel. Working as a model, Kaia has had the opportunity to travel quite a bit, and Cindy told her to always keep her eyes open and experience where she is, not just wait time holed up in a hotel room.

Kaia spoke, too, about what it’s like to take online courses at Malibu high school, juggling getting her diploma remotely while working in the fashion industry.

Being far away from home can be hard on anyone, but Kaia is still just 16 — so frequently being without her parents on the other side of the world can be a challenge.

The teen said she is particularly grateful for Facetime, which allows her to see and talk to her family even when she is far away. Sometimes, she added, she’ll leave the phone on when she sleeps so she can hear the sounds of her family back home and feel like she is with them.
