Karl Stefanovic ‘is one step closer to moving to Nine’s American bureau’

‘We’re just waiting for an official announcement’: Rumours swirl Karl Stefanovic is replacing Lizzie Pearl as Channel Nine’s U.S. correspondent – after being axed from the Today show

Rumours have been swirling that Karl Stefanovic will be redeployed to Channel Nine’s American news desk after being sacked from the Today show.

And the 44-year-old’s new appointment is looking more likely than ever after Nine’s U.S. correspondent Lizzie Pearl recently moved back to Australia, leaving the position vacant.

‘It’s got everyone at the office talking. Now that Lizzie is back we are just waiting for an official announcement really’, an insider told New Idea on Monday.

Nine executives are apparently trying to speed along Karl’s appointment to America after his Christmas Day meltdown at Gold Coast Airport proved to be a PR disaster.

‘For 14 years, Karl was the main focus of breakfast TV but with all the scandal surrounding him, he needs to be in a role where it’s no longer all about him,’ the source added.

‘If Karl reports from Hollywood then whoever he is interviewing is going to be a much bigger star than he is and that shifts the spotlight.’

It comes after Daily Mail Australia reported that Karl had his sights set on escaping the country long before his wedding to Jasmine Yarbrough in December.

Several months ago, before he was dropped from Today, the embattled journalist confided in friends that he was considering ‘going away for a while’.

At the time, he was feeling increasingly ‘strained’ due to the media scrutiny surrounding his engagement to the 34-year-old shoe designer.

See you in the States? Karl would 'ideally... like a job at Channel Nine's U.S. bureau' as he 'loves America', a source previously told Daily Mail Australia

‘He wants to get away from it all, he’s getting tired of all the attention he gets in Sydney,’ said a source familiar with Karl’s thoughts at the time.

‘Ideally, he would like a job at Channel Nine’s U.S. bureau. He loves America and Jasmine lived in Los Angeles for years while working as a model.’

It was previously rumoured for months that Karl wanted to relocate to America to be a foreign correspondent for Nine.

She’s familiar! Karl’s wife Jasmine previously lived in LA during her time as a model, and could run her shoe brand Mara & Mine from overseas. Pictured: Karl and Jasmine in November 2017

And considering that he is no longer required on the Today show from 5:30am every weekday morning, the move stateside certainly seems possible.

Although he would be moving away from his children, it is believed the TV star has shared custody with his ex-wife Cassandra Thorburn and so could fly back for visits.

Jasmine, who has already had a taste of living in California, could run her shoe brand Mara & Mine from overseas and employ staff to manage her Paddington boutique.

Coming soon! Despite being sacked from Today, Karl is still contracted to Channel Nine until the end of 2020, and will resume filming the second season of This Time Next Year in February
