Katy Perry continuously ‘turns up late’ for American Idol

After an 18-month hiatus, American Idol has been brought back for a reboot by ABC and has already begun filming with its new star judges.

Katy Perry joins Lionel Richie and country singer Luke Bryan on the panel, but reports have claimed the California Girls hit-maker has been habitually ‘turning up late’ for filming.

According to TMZ, the songstress has left show bosses ‘frustrated’ with her late arrival during the auditions round, but her time-keeping hasn’t upset fellow judges Lionel and Luke.

The publication claims Katy is ‘almost always late’ and has become known for arriving on set ’10-25 minutes after call time’.

MailOnline have contacted a representative for Katy.

It was also reported that producers have been left concerned over the judging panel, as it’s feared viewers will switch off from the new series due to the judges getting on so well.

Having hit it off while working together on the show, Katy, Lionel and Luke are said to have ‘good chemistry’, but show bosses are worried the panel is lacking its usual ‘comedic tension’ that had previously been there, thanks to Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul’s teasing relationship.

TMZ claims the new panel are ‘not at each other’s throats, either in a serious or funny way’, causing concern that it could affect the show’s ratings, as that is usually what makes American Idol, and similar talent shows, such a hit.

MailOnline have reached out to a spokesperson for American Idol.

The show has been rebooted after the initial series came to an end nearly two years ago. The original American Idol had launched in 2002 on Fox and ran for 15 series, before being cancelled in 2016.

It was confirmed just over a year after the final series that ABC would be bringing it back onto screens.

Simon, Paula and Randy Jackson had been on the judging panel for eight seasons together, with stars including Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban later replacing them.

Katy was the first judge to be confirmed for the show’s revival and has since likened her judging style to that of no-nonsense music mogul Simon, telling Variety: ‘Like Simon, I’m also a truth-teller, a straight shooter.’

She said: ‘Young kids take things to heart. I can be sarcastic as all get out and even a little snarky… but at the end of the day, I’m not here to tell anyone they suck. It’s not about that.’

Lionel and Luke were later announced as judges in September last year, with ABC revealing that Ryan Seacrest will return as host.

Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, had said in a statement: ‘We are thrilled to be ushering in this new era of ‘American Idol’ with Ryan at the helm.

‘So much of American Idol’s overwhelming success can be attributed to Ryan, whose larger-than-life personality and laudable dedication to creating quality entertainment has made him a true master of his craft.’

Seacrest added: ‘It’s genuinely hard to put into words what American Idol means to me. I’m so grateful for the show and all the career and life opportunities it’s allowed me to experience. It’s been an incredibly journey from day one.

‘To be asked to return this year… is an honor, if not a bit surreal.’

Open auditions for the series began in August and the show is set to air in March.
