Late night hosts mock Trump for being laughed at during UN speech

Late night TV hosts have had a field day mocking President Donald Trump just hours after world leaders laughed at him during his United Nations speech.

The laughter followed Trump’s boasts on Tuesday at the UN General Assembly in New York that his administration has ‘accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country’.

Clearly startled by the sudden and unexpected laughter, Trump joked that it wasn’t the reaction he expected.

Late night hosts immediately seized on the humiliating moment for Trump, with Stephen Colbert assuring the president the world leaders were not laughing at him.

‘Don’t worry Mr. President, they’re not laughing at you. They’re laughing with each other at you,’ Colbert joked on the The Late Show.

Earlier, Colbert had mocked Trump for being late to his UN address.

‘C’mon man, you’re from New York. You know what the traffic is like when the UN is here,’ he said. ‘Just take the subway. I know it smells like pee, but rumor is you like that.’

Late Night host Seth Meyers also hit out at the president, tweeting: ‘Trump was funny this morning, wasn’t he?’

‘That’s right, President Trump claimed that he has accomplished more than any other president in history, and world leaders in the audience laughed,’ Meyers said during his show.

‘Though technically they were still laughing from when he said, ‘Hello, I’m the president of the United States’.’

Jimmy Kimmel also had a jab on Jimmy Kimmel Live! when he compared the speech to when ‘your alcoholic uncle grabs the microphone at your wedding’.

Kimmel also took note of one part of Trump’s speech in which he said: ‘The US is the largest giver in the world by far, but few give anything to us’.

The late night host hit back, saying: ‘Yeah! Where’s our foreign aid, Ethiopia? How about you share some of those lentils for a change?’

Conan O’Brien also joked that Trump was furious about the laughter from the audience because for a ‘few seconds he accidentally made some foreigners happy’.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Fallon joked that ‘halfway through the speech, everyone was begging to be deported’ and that Trump hadn’t heard the much ‘laughter since his night with Stormy Daniels’.

Trump drew headshakes and laughter from fellow world leaders when he boasted of America’s economic and military might on Tuesday.

Arriving late and forcing a last-minute scheduling switch, Trump received polite applause but also blank stares as he took his blustery brand of ‘America First’ policies to the annual General Assembly.

Speaking in triumphant terms, he approached the address as an annual report to the world on his country’s progress since his inauguration.

The humiliating moment in which he was laughed at reinforced Trump’s isolation among allies and foes alike, as his nationalistic policies have created rifts with former partners and cast doubt in some circles about the reliability of American commitments around the world.
