Lauren Wagner from Adelaide rescued a baby kangaroo

A heartwarming video shows the moment a woman stopped to rescue a joey, pulling the baby from its dead mother’s couch.

The video clip showed Lauren Wagner tenderly attempting to coax the joey from its hiding spot.

The kangaroo’s mother was found dead on the side of the Seaview Road in Adelaide about 4pm on Sunday.

Ms Wagner reached her hand into the dead animal but the joey struggled.

Eventually she is able to pull the animal out by it’s legs and she quickly wrapped it in a baby blue blanket.

Ms Wagner, from Thebarton, and her friend Sarah Raggamuffin were driving home when they spotted the parent kangaroo, which had been hit by a car.

Ms Wagner said she thought she saw the animal move so they made a U-turn and drove back.

When she got a closer look she saw two legs sticking out of the pouch.

Ms Wagner told The Advertiser: ‘It made like a little crying noise when I was trying to get him. I had to be gentle because it was pretty tightly packed in there.

‘It was hard to get it out — I got both my hands in there and put it around the whole joey..

The pair took the joey, who has been named Jannick, to Sibylle Kaufmann in Happy Valley.

Ms Kaufmann is a fauna rescue expert.

The seven-month-old male joey weighs 1.2kg and is doing well, according to Ms Kaufmann.

She said: ‘It’s always a little bit tricky the first couple of days (but) he’s going to have some friends soon, he needs to learn to be a kangaroo.

‘He didn’t only lose his mother, he lost his teacher as well.’

Jannick was moved to a facility that specialises in looking after kangaroos in Strathalbyn.

There he will be kept warm by living in a pouch made of material close to other kangaroos.

He will also be on special formula.

Once Jannick is older he will be able to roam around the property with other kangaroos.

Ms Wagner has encouraged others to pay more attention to dead animals on the side of the road.

The video uploaded to her Facebook page has been viewed more than 149,000 times.
