Leigh Griffiths is set to miss both legs of Celtic’s second Champions League qualifier – after the thigh strain he sustained in pre-season training turned out to be worse than initially feared.

The striker sat out his side’s final warm-up game of the season with Shamrock Rovers last weekend and the 3-0 victory against Alashkert on Tuesday because of the issue.

But having discovered the problem now requires additional rest, he’s likely to sit out both legs of the tie against Valur or Rosenborg.

‘Leigh is probably two or three weeks away,’ said Brendan Rodgers. ‘We’ll know more in a few weeks’ time.

‘It’s unfortunate really for him but that’s how football works. For any player when you miss a period of pre-season it’s always difficult, especially if you’ve worked hard.

‘You want to be at a good level and get as much of your fitness in during this period so it’s unfortunate for any player that’s out.’ Both Olivier Ntcham and Odsonne Edouard trained as normal after being involved in a car crash on Wednesday.

Rodgers will field two separate sides against Standard Liege in a friendly on Saturday.
