This is the dramatic moment a 60-year-old man fights off a leopard who went on the rampage in an Indian village.

As his neighbours in the hamlet of Khairi shout in sheer panic, the man struggles to force the animal off his chest with a stick after it had mauled three people.

The attack in the Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh last week was filmed by the terrified neighbours who were trying to scare it away.

As the man tries to contain it, the leopard tries kicking out from the floor and then leaps onto the villager’s front as it tries to overcome him.

But he refused to be beaten, taking hold of a stick in the doorway to keep the animal at bay, and wrestling with it to stop it pinning him to the ground.

The leopard sneaked into Khairi with its cubs and began to attack, starting in the courtyard of a villager called Jaikishan.

It proceeded to pounce on a 50-year-old woman called Lakhmina, who was sunbathing in front of her house.

However, after the 60-year-old had put up a stronger fight than expected, the leopard ran away and disappeared into sugar cane fields nearby.

Acting on the information of the villagers, area forest officer Mahendra Maurya arrived at the scene with his team.

The villagers were unhappy with the forest department’s failure to trap the leopard, according to reports, while the injured people were taken to the Bahraich district hospital for treatment.
