Liberal Party meeting descends into violence in Arncliffe

A brawl has erupted at a southern Sydney cafe where a Liberal Party branch meeting was taking place on the eve of the state budget.  

Police said they ‘saw numerous people running from the location when they arrived at the Arncliffe business about 7pm on Monday.

The brawl erupted after several people at the café blocked the entrance to the meeting a witness told 9NEWS . 

A man in his 40s (pictured) was taken to St George Hospital with minor injuries and an elderly woman was also assaulted.

The witness who did not wished to be named said, ‘there was an altercation when some members… some people who are affiliated with the owner of the shop, were basically intimidating and swearing at the other who belong to the branch and were invited to the meeting.’

The witnessed continued saying one of the older women stood up and said ‘don’t push me,’ and ‘don’t swear at me’.

He also added, ‘they were getting abusive at her and other gentleman tried to stop them abusing her, and they ganged up on him and took him outside and used tables and chairs to bash him.’

A man in his 40s was taken to St George Hospital with minor injuries.

‘Police are now attempting to piece together exactly what happened and how many people were involved,’ NSW Police said in a statement.

They urged anyone with footage of the incident to contact authorities.

A Liberal Party spokesman said the party was aware of the incident and was cooperating with police.

‘An internal investigation will also be undertaken and disciplinary action taken against those responsible,’ he said in a statement to AAP.

‘The Liberal Party strongly condemns the kind of behaviour that is alleged to have occurred.’

The brawl comes ahead of Tuesday’s state budget, with Treasurer Dominic Perrottet planning to mix record infrastructure spend with tax cuts and concessions.
