Liberal vice president is slammed after claiming Jacinda Ardern copied Australia after Christchurch

The Liberal Party vice president has been criticised for her ‘train wreck’ appearance on Q&A.

Teena McQueen dismissed New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s swift gun law reforms in the wake of the Christchurch mosque shootings during the show on Monday night.

‘We did that years ago. The Liberal Party did that years ago with John Howard,’ she told the audience – who responded with loud groans.

Ms McQueen appeared on the panel alongside American author Roxane Gay.

Ms Gay praised Ms Ardern’s measured response to the massacre, and said ‘of course you did’ when Ms McQueen claimed the Liberals had already cracked down on guns.

The crowd laughed at Ms Gay’s response.

‘You think that’s funny? John Howard did do that. Jacinda Ardern is copying exactly…’ Ms McQueen said before trailing off.

‘Can I also remind you, Jacinda Ardern is only there because she formed an alliance with Winston Peters? I think everyone forgets that little fact.’

Q&A host Tony Jones asked about the ‘general point’ that Ms Ardern’s handling of the tragedy differed to that of Australian politicians.

‘I think it happened in Jacinda’s country. I mean, naturally she’s going to be closer to it and more connected to it,’ Ms McQueen said.

Ms McQueen also defended US President Donald Trump, saying Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation had ‘exonerated’ him.

‘There’s nothing there. I mean, it’s two years of wasted presidency, two years of the Democrats going crazy and, you know, he did nothing to interfere with the report,’ Ms McQueen said.

She said she was ‘probably the only person on the panel that’s spent time with Donald Trump’ after they met when he was running the Miss Universe beauty pageant in 2006.

‘I had a great time [talking] to him about politics… he was none of those things – he was not racist, not sexist, none of those things,’ she said.

Ms McQueen said she was not aware of white supremacy in Australia, and claimed the worst hate speech she had heard in the country had come from Greens leader Richard Di Natale.

‘The vile language used against conservatives is disgraceful,’ she said.

‘She’s simply incapable of representing the Liberal Party well,’ she said.

‘It says something about the Liberal Party if this woman is considered to be a suitable vice president,’ another person said.

‘She was so out of her depth, she was drowning.’

Senior Liberal Party members have since distanced themselves from Ms McQueen, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The president of the New South Wales Liberal Women’s Council contacted party members on Monday night to complain about Ms McQueen’s appearance on Q&A.

Cabinet minister Simon Birmingham had earlier told Ms McQueen to choose between being a media commentator or party official after her appearances on Sky News.

Ms McQueen reportedly refused, telling colleagues that she had ‘a contract with Sky’.
