Lisa Wilkinson reveals her arm was almost amputated

She experienced a horrible fall during an Italian holiday resulting in an arm injury.

And Lisa Wilkinson has revealed the damage done in July was more serious than she initially disclosed.

The 57-year-old told an audience at a Business Chicks event in Sydney on Thursday she was informed by Australian doctors she almost needed her arm amputated.

‘The doctors were very sweet but not very talented,’ the veteran journalist told the packed crowd about her Italian experience. 

‘They put a cast on that cut off my circulation for four of five days and when they put the cast on, I was so out of it because they aren’t big believers in painkillers in Italy, I’ve now discovered,’ she continued.

‘So they manipulated my bones back into position without any pain relief,’ she added.

Lisa went on to explain that upon arrival back in Australia, local surgeons determined had she waited any longer for a procedure, amputation would have been needed. 

The former Today co-host was enjoying a getaway on the Amalfi Coast with husband Peter FitzSimons when she slipped and fell in the shower, snapping her right arm.

She initially thanked the hospital for its immediate care, writing for Huffington Post that ‘within minutes I was in the hands of wonderful professionals’.

She also mentioned a reciprocal health care agreement between Australia and Italy meant she received complimentary medical attention in the European country.

‘In Italy, public hospitals are free for everyone, including blow-in tourists like us,’ she described.
