Liverpool arrive back in England after record-breaking win

Liverpool landed back home in the early hours of Wednesday morning after their record-breaking Champions League away win in Slovenia.

Jurgen Klopp and his players landed back in Liverpool at 1.20, just hours after thrashing Maribor 7-0.

The result marked the joint-biggest away win in the history of the competition and put the Reds top of Group D on goal difference.

Liverpool raced into a four-goal lead in the first-half thanks to strikes from Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and a Mohamed Salah brace.

Firmino added a second after half-time with further strikes from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, his first since joining from Arsenal, and Trent Alexander-Arnold adding gloss to the final score.

Klopp admitted he had no idea his side had matched a Champions League record, but was pleased to see his charges write their names into the record books.

‘We spoke a few times about how the wonderful history of this club can sometimes feel like a backpack so it’s nice to write history, and it will probably be difficult to beat that.

‘It’s quite rare that you win 7-0 but it shows again we did unbelievably well. I think Maribor was quite confident before the game because of different reasons [and] because they are a very good team.’

With Spartak Moscow soaring to a surprise 5-1 win against Sevilla, Liverpool now top the group with five points from three games.

But before they can turn their attentions to the return clash with Maribor in a fortnight, Liverpool most focus on their Premier League form.

They lie eighth in the table, already nine points off league leaders Manchester City and face a challenging trip to Wembley to take on Tottenham at the weekend.

Klopp added: ‘We try to use the result now, but the next game is against Tottenham so it’s pretty likely it will not be a similar result,’ he said.

‘But no problem, we have four or five days to recover and prepare for the game, so that’s good and we are already looking forward to it.’
