The fire is thought to have spread from the villas to the restaurant and kitchen at the resort.

According to Maldives National Defence Force, strong winds accelerated the spread of the fire.

As the resort is on an island that is only accessible via speed boat, Ms Otaduy, her family and other panicked guests fled to the corner of the beach to wait for help.

She said she and her partner held onto their two-year-old son for dear life, as the guests were handed life saving vests and masks.

London model and fashion blogger Lucy Williams only managed to grab her passports and few essentials.

The luxurious resort was included on TripAdvisor’s top five hotels in the world in 2018 and has seen celebrities along the likes of Tommy Lee and Adrien Brody stay in its over-water villas.

Some guests had paid upwards of $5,000 only to have their dream holiday burn to ashes.

Staff had anticipated the resort to be fully booked, with Christmas and New Year holidays the busiest time of of year for the Maldvies tourism industry.

Fire and rescue officers arrived on scene and brought the blazing inferno under control early Thursday morning.

Gili Lankanfushi management said an investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.

‘The cause of the incident is not yet known and it is too early to assess the extent of damage however a full investigation will of course be launched soon,’ the resort said.

The resort praised staff for their composure and level-headed calmness during the ordeal.

The heroic staff confirmed on Twitter no guests had been injured.

Alternative accommodation was also provided to the guests, according to the resort.

As tired guests try to pick up the pieces from their shattered holiday, past patrons have taken to social media to show their support.

‘My heart was so sad to hear about the fire last night and the damages that were done to this beautiful island we just visited last month,’ one person said.

‘I’m so relieved that all of the amazing staff made it out okay and same with the travelers.’
