Man proposes to boyfriend after Australia votes YES

This is the heartwarming moment a man proposed to his boyfriend immediately after finding out Australia has voted ‘Yes’ to same-sex marriage.

James Brechney and Stuart Henshell among the crowds eagerly awaiting the result of the voluntary postal survey in Sydney’s Prince Alfred Park on Wednesday morning.

Shortly after it was revealed that the ‘Yes’ vote had won, Mr Brechney – dressed in a shocking pink suit – was interviewed by an ABC reporter.

‘As terrible as this postal survey has been, the by-product has been this beautiful moment,’ he said.

‘We’ve been fighting for this for so long. We’ve been together for two and a half years and it’s just been a journey for us.’

Asked where the journey had taken them, Mr Brechney replied: ‘We’ve been together for two-and-a-half years and I think the moment has really blown us away.

‘Stuart, I love you with all my heart and I want to tell you something in front of the cameras,’ he adds, before getting down on one knee.

A shocked Mr Henshell, dressed in a sequinned jacket, nods repeatedly before the newly-engaged couple kiss.

After the proposal, Mr Brechney took to social media to share news of his engagement with his friends.

‘The country said YES and so did my man!!’ he wrote on Twitter alongside a clip of the proposal.

‘The way society has changed so much over a decade has been incredible,’ he told Nine News.

‘It’s just thrilling to finally be able to have that moment where you can have a ceremony in front of the ones you love, it’s just beautiful.’

Brechney also revealed that he had spent a few weeks planning the proposal after getting hold of Mr Henshall’s grandmother’s ring – and made sure their family and friends were there.

‘It was the perfect moment to ask and to get a second yes, today, from Stuart.’
