This is the terrifying moment a strange man breaks into a family’s backyard in the dead of night to touch and smell their children’s underpants.

Surveillance footage uploaded online captures the man slowly walking down the driveway of the home in Lurnea, in Sydney’s far south-west, at 2.30am on Sunday.

Wearing a dirty singlet and cap, he starts inspecting a pile of children’s clothes hung up on a small clothes line in the backyard next to kids play equipment and bikes.

Two minutes later he casually strolls back out of the driveway, holding a pile of girl’s underwear in one hand.

According to a mother who posted the footage online, the man accidentally left behind her daughter’s underwear in the front yard.  

‘Went through the kids cloths on the line and took underwear nothing else,’ she wrote online after posting footage of the incident to Facebook.

‘We found our daughters undies in the front yard and the police have taken them for DNA testing, they are treating it seriously,’ she added.

A spokesman for NSW Police told Daily Mail Australia they had received a report and were investigating the frightening incident.

‘Police are investigating an incident in which a person allegedly entered the backyard of a residence in Lurnea overnight,’ he said in a statement.

The spokesman said the suspected intruder allegedly touched clothes on the clothesline and peered inside a window at the home.

‘The man left the backyard after a resident yelled at him,’ he added.
