Man who attacked mum daughter may be free in two years

A man who attacked his former partner and her mother with a chainsaw could spend two years in jail – much to the dismay of his victims.

Chloe Griffiths, 29, and her mother Julie were injured while fighting off Chloe’s ex-boyfriend Terry Purvis, 31, who was wielding a chainsaw when he attacked the pair at a Port Macquarie home in August last year.

On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Purvis to five-and-a-half years with the chance of parole after two years, according to The West Australian.

Chloe and Julie said erupted into tears after the sentencing was announced, telling reporters they were mortified by the decision.

‘I’m absolutely dumbfounded,’ Julie said.

‘[It’s] like my life wasn’t worth anything.’

Chloe called for harsher sentences as she sobbed into a tissue as her mum put her arms around her.

‘They say they want to take a stand against domestic violence and it’s examples like this – no one is standing up for what’s right,’ Chloe said.

Purvis lacerated Julie’s arm in the attack, which occurred after the 31-year-old hacked his way through a fence and onto her property.

‘It was fight or die at the end of the day and that’s what we did,’ Chloe told 7News.

The mother and daughter locked themselves in a bedroom before Purvis allegedly used the chainsaw to cut the door down.

‘He was cutting a triangle around the door handle and Chloe’s on the phone to triple-0 saying I think I’m going to lose my mum – don’t let me lose my mum,’ Julie said.

Once inside the bedroom, Chloe, who suffered wounds to her hands and face, managed to take the chainsaw from Purvis.

‘It didn’t matter what he did, she took him on – and she beat him – she got that chainsaw off him,’ Julie said.

A five-year-old boy and a girl, seven, were at the house at the time of the incident, but were not injured.

Purvis handed himself into Port Macquarie Police Station a short time later were he was arrested.
