Paramedics battled to reach the man and were forced to call in an ambulance helicopter to help winch him out of the drain.

He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition with head injuries.

It’s understood he will undergo a mental health assessment, according to 3AW.

‘The flight paramedic was winched down and further supported the patient before he was airlifted out,’ Gavan Keane from Victoria Ambulance told 7 News.

‘It was quite a difficult extrication, but it went quite smoothly.’

Neighbours who were woken by the overnight operation described seeing dozens of emergency workers attempting to rescue the stuck man.
