Manchester parents fined £120 after they took son to Crete

A mother has been fined £120 after she took her son to Greece during term time so he could attend his grandmother’s wedding.

Vicky Armitage has slammed the decision of her son’s school and the local authority, which deemed the trip as not constituting an ‘exceptional circumstance’.

Her eight-year-old son Toby was ringbearer at the family event, which was held on the Greek island of Crete where his grandmother Tricia lives.

The youngster, from Mossley, Greater Manchester, flew out with the rest of his family in July, missing the last two weeks of the school year.

Ms Armitage told The Sun: ‘I am so angry that the head teacher of the school and then the council has not seen this as an exceptional circumstance.

‘My family consider a wedding very important. My mother lives in Crete, I get to see her once maybe twice a year, if she can come to us. This was a very big deal for us.

‘[The teacher] gave me a handwriting book, some worksheets and some numeracy work to do. We completed all of them in the two weeks whilst were away.’

Ms Armitage says she only received a letter from Tameside Council informing her of the fine on Friday, three months after they returned back home.

The mother said she intended to appeal the decision of Milton St John’s Primary School but claims she was never given the opportunity.

She has now been informed that she must pay up before November 24 or risk being fined double.

MailOnline has contacted Tameside Council for comment.
