Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Alexis Sanchez faces up to six weeks out with a knee injury.

The 30-year-old’s Old Trafford career hit its latest roadblock as he was forced off early in the second half of Saturday’s 3-2 league win against Southampton.

Chile physio Pedro Onate said Sanchez would be ‘unavailable to play for between six and eight weeks’ – comments Solskjaer was asked about ahead of the second leg of United’s Champions League last-16 clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Norwegian told a press conference: ‘It was a bad knee injury so if it’s four weeks or six, hopefully he’ll recover quickly.’

Sanchez’s absence means United will be without 10 players for the last-16 second leg at the Parc des Princes.

Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic and Anthony Martial are unavailable due to fitness issues, so too Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia, Juan Mata and Matteo Darmian.

Paul Pogba is the most high-profile absentee after being sent off late in the first leg at Old Trafford, meaning 18-year-old Brandon Williams has been included in the travelling squad for the first time.

‘It’s just one of those situations that we come into, that we’ve lost a few players,’ Solskjaer said.

‘We’ll cope with that, we’ll have a good team out there. We didn’t lose any in the last game – Alexis was the one that we struggled to get fit for now.

‘Brandon is a full-back who can play both sides, quick. It’s the first time he travels with us – he didn’t expect to come, but that’s part of being here.

‘Suddenly you’re called upon, that’s why you’re in the academy, that we believe in you and suddenly you have to step up.’
