One local resident, who did not want to be named, said: ‘It is disgusting what has happened. He was a genuine bloke. We all knew him as Tosh.

‘It all happened that quick. I nipped outside for a fag and saw him there in a sleeping bag.

‘I went back in to the bar and 10 minutes later there were all these people round him and an ambulance and the police were there quickly.

‘He never asked people for money. He just drinks. He was harmless.’
