Mauboy to represent Aust at Eurovision

Jessica Mauboy has been chosen as Australia’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest in Portugal next May.

It won’t be the first time the pop star has performed at Eurovision as Mauboy was Australia’s first representative in the competition in 2014, singing Sea Of Flags as an interval act in Copenhagen.

She will be Australia’s fourth official entry into the competition after three consecutive years of top 10 finishes.

“Eurovision is a wonderfully joyous and unique event. It brings together over 40 diverse countries and cultures under one roof to unite us all in music,” Mauboy said.

“It shows how much the power of song can transcend differences. I will sing my heart out for Australia. I’m so proud to be officially representing my country and a little bit nervous – mainly about the stress of the dress.”

It’s another feather in the 28-year-old’s cap who has been accumulating accomplishments since her breakthrough on Australian Idol in 2006. She has sold more than 3.4 million units with five top 10 albums and collected two ARIA Awards.

The Darwin singer also paved the way for Australia to enter Eurovision in an official capacity when Guy Sebastian finished fifth in 2015 with his track Tonight Again.

Since then Australia has made a respectable mark at Eurovision with Dami Im finishing second in 2016 and this year’s entrant Isaiah Firebrace placed ninth in Kiev.

Mauboy will compete in a semi-final at Eurovision, the world’s largest television music competition, for her chance to reach the final on May 12 in Lisbon.

* Eurovision will be broadcast on SBS from May 9-13, 2018.
