Mauro Icardi believes ‘ugly’ atmosphere at Inter Milan has vanished following dramatic late win over Tottenham in Champions League
Mauro Icardi believes Inter Milan’s late Champions League turnaround against Tottenham has drawn a line under their sluggish start to the season.
They had collected just four points from their opening four Serie A matches amid an ‘ugly’ atmosphere but marked their return to Europe’s premier competition on Tuesday night with a much-needed victory.
Tottenham led in the San Siro thanks to Christian Eriksen’s 53rd-minute effort and Inter’s underwhelming start to the campaign looked set to continue.

The Argentine forward fired home Inter’s equalising goal with four minutes remaining
But Icardi fired home a stunning volley to draw Inter level in the 86th-minute and Matias Vecino headed their winner in the second minute of stoppage time.
And the Argentine forward, who’d had a quiet night until his goal, now wants Inter to kick on, with Sampdoria their next opponents on Saturday.
‘We know we’re a strong team and that we can compete against anyone, we’ve been waiting for this match for three months and it gives us a lot of strength for the league,’ he told Sky Italia.
Icardi admitted there had been an ‘ugly’ atmosphere following Inter’s poor start to the season
Icardi is embraced by his manager Luciano Spalletti following Inter’s European success
‘A match like that, in the Champions League, gives you so much but one game means nothing.
‘We have to stay calm, take the good things we’ve done and go to play on Saturday with a different mentality.
‘The environment was ugly in these past few weeks, but a game like this gives us confidence. Vecino has popped up like that for two crucial wins, but what’s most important is for Inter to win.’
