McDonald’s changed its beloved apple pie recipe and Twitter users are furious

Don’t mess with a man’s go-to fast food order — especially if he’s on Twitter.

McDonald’s announced last week that it has changed the recipe for its beloved apple pie, updating the recipe for the first time in over two and a half decades.

And, unsurprisingly, many fans of the baked treat are furious, taking to social media to complain about the unwelcome update.

Surprise! McDonald’s announced last week that it was debuting a new version of its beloved apple pies

What's new: They're now made with slice apples, instead of diced, and more cinnamon — and the crust now features a lattice design and just sugar on top, instead of sugar and cinnamon

The new apple pie is already being rolled out in stores. ‘Freshly baked and served warm,’ according to McDonald’s, the update has more cinnamon in the filling to give it more flavor.

It’s also made with ‘sliced 100 per cent American grown apples,’ versus the diced apples it used before, and contains a mix of Golden Delicious, Jonagold, Rome, Gala, Ida Red, and Fuji varieties.

The crust is different, too: Now, it’s made with a ‘tender, flaky, lattice top crust with a sprinkled sugar topping’ — as opposed to the sugar and cinnamon topping it had before.

It’s also served in a new peach box, an update on the old green boxes.

‘Our new freshly baked Apple pie recipe is in line with other positive changes we have made,’ Tiffany Briggs, a McDonald’s spokesperson, said in a press release.

‘We removed, for example, artificial preservatives from our Chicken McNuggets and switched to real butter in our breakfast sandwiches because those changes matter to our guests.

‘Likewise, our new apple pie is made with fewer ingredients such as sugar, sliced 100-percent American grown apples and a bit of cinnamon to the filling for flavor to give each one that homemade taste our customers love.’

But change anything that people have liked for years and there is sure to be a backlash on social media.

Dozens of Twitter users have complained, calling the update a bad move.

‘McDonald’s changed their apple pie crust & we should be rioting in the streets,’ wrote one woman.

‘Not even the apple pies taste the same anymore at McDonald’s. my cravings were disrespected today,’ wrote another.

One angry customer tweeted, ‘@McDonalds I didn’t think you could really ruin an apple pie… but you managed to do just that. They are horrible now.’

‘@McDonalds If you’re going to change the recipe for the apple pie, fine. BUT YOU MESSED WITH THE CRUST. No, no no. Where’s the crust? There’s more holes than crust in this so-called “crust”. I want my old pie back,’ added another disappointed man.

As Eater points out, the last time McDonald’s changed its apple pies was back in 1992. Before then, the pies were fries, but that year they began baking them instead.

However, before that, the handheld pie had been through several changes in its history.

It debuted on the menu in 1968, thanks to a Knoxville, Tennessee, franchisee named Litton Cochran. It was the first dessert on the menu, and was introduced the same year as the Big Mac.

The latest update has been in the works since 2016, when McDonald’s had a culinary team begin to update the recipe to include slice apples and a more decorative crust.
