A council has organised a transgender swimming night after hearing concerns from residents.

Darebin City Council in Melbourne is holding a ‘Trans and Gender Diverse Swim Night’ at the Reservoir Leisure Centre on February 24.

A Facebook event page claims it is ‘Victoria’s first ever trans and gender diverse swim night, providing indoor pools where trans and gender diverse people can exercise, socialise and feel safe’.

‘So come along to be part of something truly wonderful in a safe place amongst like-minded individuals.’

Darebin City Council caused controversy in 2017 when it decided to stop celebrating Australia Day.

Councillor Steph Amir tweeted a list of ‘reasons why we need a trans-inclusive swim session, as told by trans and gender diverse people themselves’.

She said many transgender people didn’t visit swimming pools and gyms ‘out of fear’.

The swim night will be held during the pool’s normal opening hours.
