Missy Higgins backs the ‘Me Too’ campaign

The Harvey Weinstein scandal has rocked Hollywood in recent months.

And recently, Charmed actress Alyssa Milano encouraged women to come forward with their stories and say if they have ever been sexually assaulted or harassed, using the ‘Me Too’ hashtag, online.

And now some Australian musicians and stars have back the ‘Me Too’ campaign, with the likes of Missy Higgins and Clare Bowditch signing an open letter to the local music industry.

The Daily Telegraph reports the chart-toppers who are taking action against the abuse of power.

The letter reportedly reads: ‘In the face of uncountable discrimination, harassment, violence, and the general menace of sexist jargon, we have gritted our teeth and gotten on with the job. But today we say, no more.’

In the letter, The Daily Telegraph reports that some people have shared their stories anonymously, with one woman writing: ‘My head has been pushed towards a colleague’s crotch and held there despite me saying no.’

Hollywood star Alyssa Milano, 44, sparked the social media campaign in October, calling on women to speak up about surviving sexual assault and harassment, by using the hashtag.

The hashtag  – which started on Twitter – went viral, with the likes of Will and Grace’s Debra Messing and Anna Paquin getting on board.

Alyssa said she got the idea for the social media campaign from a friend.

‘If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘Me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem,’ she tweeted.

Alyssa recently spoke about disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein and his decades of sexually harassing women.

‘While I am sickened and angered over the disturbing accusations of Weinstein’s sexual predation and abuse of power, I’m happy – ecstatic even – that it has opened up a dialogue around the continued sexual harassment, objectification and degradation of women,’ she said earlier.
