Missy Higgins reveals experience with sexism in the music industry

Missy Higgins (real name Melissa Morrison Higgins) has established herself as a powerful feminist icon over the years.

And the talented star spoke this week about how she struggled to combat sexism in the Australian music industry

Featuring in the new documentary Her Sound, Her Story, the mother-of-one recalled she was first confronted with the reality of sexism when a crew member wouldn’t listen to her complaints about feedback at a soundcheck ahead of her gig.

‘He totally talked down to me’: Heavily pregnant Missy Higgins revealed her first experience with sexism in the Australian music industry in new documentary Her Sound Her Story

In the documentary, Missy revealed she was spoken down to when she attempted to correct the soundcheck issues ahead of a concert.

‘My sound was feeding back and I said that to the sound guy and he’s like ‘No, I don’t think so, love. I think it’s how it’s supposed to be’,’ Missy recollected of the encounter.

She added: ‘He totally talked down to me. It took me ages to convince him to come over and listen to it because he assumed I didn’t know what I was talking about.’

In May, Missy shocked fans when she dramatically stopped her show mid-concert in Sydney, later apologising to concertgoers.

At the time, heavily pregnant Missy was singing her hit singles during an intimate gig when she unexpectedly departed the stage.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the star later apologised and revealed she simply needed to use the toilet.

‘That was incredibly awkward… That has never happened to me before,’ she reportedly told the crowd upon returning to the stage.

Her backup singers were forced to improvise for several moments and began singing ‘Missy is doing a wee.’

In March, the Melbourne-native announced she is expecting her second child with fiance Dan Lee, while opening up for Ed Sheeran’s Perth concert.

Speaking to the 60,000-strong crowd, the 34-year-old told the story of how she met her Dan, before sharing the exciting news.

Talking down! 'He totally talked down to me. It took me ages even to him to come over and listen to it because he assumed I didn't know what I was talking about,' she said
