Models with scars and skin conditions pose for Missguided

Missguided has launched a powerful new campaign featuring models with skin conditions and scarring to celebrate what the fashion industry perceives as ‘flaws’.

The fashion giant’s new #InYourOwnSkin campaign features models such as Londoner Maya Spencer-Berkeley, whose skin is so fragile it constantly blisters – due to the condition Epidermolysis bullosa.

Also featured are plus size model with albinism Joanne Dion and Brazilian model and designer Mariana Mendes, 24, who has a large birthmark on her face.

The campaign is part of an ongoing effort by the brand to show women as ‘real and authentic’.

‘Showing REAL women and not giving everyone the idea that there is just one way to be.’

Her campaign co-star Isabella Fernandes has scarring across her right arm and back after being injured in a house fire when she was 17.

She hopes to normalise disabilties and disfigurements through her modelling work, which she’s undertaking at the same time as studying at university.

In November 2017, Missguided became one of the first to refuse to airbrush out stretch marks on models appearing on its website.

Since it was launched in Manchester in 2009 by Nitin Passi, Missguided has seen incredible growth.

Sales exceed £200M a year and it has now expanded into the US, Australia, France and Germany.
