A fight broke out at Canyon Springs-Basic high school after a football game on Friday.

The row erupted between the opposing sides and according to Captain Ken Young from Clark County School District Police Department it involved both players and staff members.

‘At the conclusion of the game there was an altercation on the field with players and staff members from each side of the field,’ he said.

‘In the midst of this one of our officers that was assigned to the event was initially monitoring the crowd to ensure no-body came onto the field to participate.’

At a news conference Monday Young addressed the brawl and his fellow officers decision to use pepper spray to end it, the Las Vegas Review Journal reports.

Although the investigation is ongoing, Young defended his colleague saying ‘it was in his best interest,’ to have used the spray.

At the beginning of the conference Young defended the officer’s actions by saying his colleague thought there was an adult on the floor being attacked by players.

He then said: ‘at that time the sergeant responded to the field, gave verbal commands and then deployed pepper spray.’

‘So in this particular instance, looking at the large crowd, it was in his best interest, his best decision, that he used the pepper spray and it did get the desired result that people stop fighting and they disengage,’ he continued.

Young did say that nothing has happened yet: ‘at this point there have been no arrests, we are still making our investigation to find out as to why the fight started and who all was involved.’

Despite the ongoing ‘investigation’ Young said no victims have come forward yet and he is unaware of any injuries at this stage.
