This is the moment a grieving father sprints away from police with his dead baby daughter in his arms, despite an officer firing a warning shot in Iquitos, Peru.

Roy Perez, 40, took her corpse from the morgue after she drowned – his family say he could not bear the thought of her being cut open in an autopsy.

Harrowing video shows chaotic scenes outside the morgue at Apoyos Hospital as police try to negotiate with the distraught Perez.

He starts sprinting away as the police chase him, amid shouts from concerned bystanders before an officer fires into the air.

Local media report the father removed his daughter’s body to prevent it being taken to the central morgue for the autopsy.

The two-year-old girl drowned in the Itaya river in the district of Belen.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital and police officers then arrived to take the body to the local morgue for an autopsy.

In the video, Perez can be seen holding the baby in his arms as he tries to walk away from the hospital.

The grieving father begins walking past a police officer as his relatives try to help him pass.

The officer blocks Perez’s way but the father begins walking in another direction before sprinting down the street with an officer in pursuit.

The cop then fires his gun into the air but this does not stop Perez, who reportedly managed to escape the scene with his daughter’s body on a small boat.

Perez’s family told reporters that the father did not want his daughter’s body to be cut open.

Police are searching for Perez in an ongoing investigation whilst the father is said to have asked the authorities for the official documents to allow his daughter to be buried.
