Mother-of-two killed in horror hit-and-run by five teens

Five teenagers have been charged with the manslaughter of a nurse who was hit by a stolen car on her way to work.

Lucy Paveley died in her mangled red Nissan Micra after allegedly being hit just after 6.30am on Sunday by a car being driven double the speed limit and fleeing police.

The alleged offenders include an 18-year-old man, two boys aged 15, a boy aged 14 and the youngest, a boy, aged just 13.

Rather than checking on the 40-year-old mother-of-two, they allegedly abandoned the white Mitsubishi Pajero and fled in a black Mazda 3 sedan, leaving her to die.

The 18-year-old will face Adelaide Magistrates Court while the four young boys will face Youth Court. All five will face the charges on Tuesday.

Mrs Paveley was driving to her early shift on Sunday morning when she was struck while crossing a green light.

The Anglicare nurse died instantly in the crash at the corner of Main North Road and Kings Road in the city’s north.

Mrs Paveley’s husband, eight-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son were being consoled by friends and family on Monday at their Mawson Lakes home.

AnglicareSA released a statement saying they were devastated by Mrs Paveley’s death and described the incident as ‘senseless’.

‘Lucy was a much-loved and valued member of the AnglicareSA Elizabeth Dutton Court team, where she worked as a care worker since 2013,’ a spokesperson said.

‘When a senseless accident like this occurs our thoughts are with the family affected as well as out residents here at AnglicareSA Elizabeth Dutton Court and our staff, Lucy’s friends and colleagues.’

Chief executive of AnglicareSA Reverend Peter Sandeman said ‘nobody wins’ with situations like this.

‘The lives of those who committed this crime are going to be impacted forever, and the families themselves have suffered a great loss,’ he said.

‘So nobody wins. Everybody loses from a senseless death.’

Police believed the fatal crash followed a series of a break-ins by those involved, with the Pajero being stolen from a house in Grange.

The 4WD was reportedly pursued by police on Saturday night before the police called off the chase shortly before the collision.

The 4WD was then used in a burglary at Brahma Lodge where it was believed the black Mazda was also stolen.

Superintendent Anthony Fioravanti of the Traffic Support Branch said the police were not actively pursuing the stolen cars at the time of the crash.

Officers briefly went after the two cars travelling in convoy minutes before the crash, but quickly broke off due to how dangerously they were being driven.

‘When the crash occurred it was totally unbelievable and disgraceful how they crashed into this car at high speed,’ he said.

‘They jumped into another car and left the 40-year-old woman there in the car.

‘Police were at the scene within a very short period however unfortunately the woman was deceased at the time they attended.’

Witnesses reported seeing the Pajero come ‘blasting through’ before slamming into the woman.

‘It happened as a result of the irresponsible actions of these people who don’t give any regard for other people’s lives. They don’t think about anyone and it’s an absolute disgrace, said Superintendent Fioravanti.
