Naomi Robson on gender pay gap and sexual harassment story

She’s known for her decade-long stint as the Australian television presenter who featured on the popular Seven Network current affairs show, Today Tonight.

And Naomi Robson has weighed in on the gender pay gap debacle and opens up about her personal experience with sexual harassment in the work place.

Talking to Sunday’s Stellar, Naomi shared: ‘I believe, that it is only fair and reasonable that if two people do the same job and the same quality of work, irrespective of their gender or their age or whatever it might be, that they should be paid the same – But television doesn’t really work like that.’

Naomi went on to address the highly circulated story of Lisa Wilkinson’s shocking departure from the Today show.

Lisa quit the Today Show after Channel Nine refused to pay her the same salary as co-host Karl Stefanovic.

On this, Naomi shared: ‘Lisa Wilkinson’s case has highlighted this issue and I think it’s going to put people on notice to a certain extent, and I think that’s not such a bad thing. Change is long overdue — this is certainly one area where social media is driving that change.’

She further shared that Lisa’s case has advertised the issue at hand on a social platform, exposing the necessary conversation that needs to be addressed and can no longer be one that receives a blind eye.

During the conversation, Naomi expressed that, having started in the industry in the 1990’s, she feels grateful that she dodged any inappropriate sexual advances during a time where it was considered a norm.

‘It never happened to me, apart from one time when a producer slapped me on the backside. And I just turned around and said to him, ‘You do that again, I will slap you so hard your teeth will rattle for a month.’ He slapped me really hard on the backside. Not only was it demeaning and rude, and appalling in every way — but it hurt! So that’s what I said and that never happened again.’
