A 25-year-old woman in upstate New York has been charged with second-degree murder for the bathtub drowning of her 10-day-old son, police say.
Markiya Mitchell was arrested and charged in connection with the death of her son Jeremiah Mitchell, Rochester Police Chief Michael Ciminelli said.

The baby boy was taken to Rochester General Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Mitchell was arraigned on the murder charge Tuesday morning in Rochester City Court.

Police say Mitchell also has a 7-year-old child, who’s currently in the care of a relative.
Additional charges are pending in the case and Mitchell is scheduled to return to City Court Friday morning for a preliminary hearing.
Mitchell reportedly has a criminal record, but police would not outline her criminal history.
Authorities said they could not discuss Mitchell’s mental state.
