NFL inks Roger Goodell to new five-year, $200million deal

  • NFL compensation committee:  ‘We are pleased to report that there is a nearly unanimous consensus among the ownership in favor of signing the contract extension now… [We hope the deal helps] to avoid further controversy’

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has signed his contract extension after Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spent several weeks trying to thwart the deal.

The deal is said to be for five years and could be worth as much as $200 million, assuming the NFL reaches all of its financial targets, according to Ken Belson of The New York Times.

The league’s compensation committee sent a letter to owners on Wednesday, according to multiple reports, which stated that the ‘binding contract extension has been signed by the Commissioner and by Arthur Blank, on behalf of the League entities.’

Blank is the owner of the Atlanta Falcons and the head of the negotiation committee, which was tasked with negotiating the deal.

‘We are pleased to report that there is a nearly unanimous consensus among the ownership in favor of signing the contract extension now,’ read the letter.

It goes on to say that the committee hopes the deal helps ‘to avoid further controversy surrounding this issue.’

Goodell previously made around $40 million a year, depending on how many incentives the leagues achieves in any given season. In 2013, for instance, he pocketed $44 million, but that figure dropped to $34 million in 2014.

Goodell’s earnings were previously recorded publicly, but the NFL changed its not-for-profit status in 2015, shielding the Commissioner from revealing any such information.
