‘We planned for more’: NRL couple Sam and Phoebe Burgess were keen to welcome a third child before their fairytale marriage ended just weeks after welcoming newborn son

NRL couple Sam and Phoebe Burgess called time on their three-year marriage over the Christmas period.

And while their newest addition, son William, was born in December, the parents already had plans for another child before their fairytale marriage turned sour.

Just three months ago, Phoebe sounded optimistic about her future with Sam as she told Who Magazine the pair were both keen to build their brood following the mother’s much-needed back surgery.

‘I’ve had two surgeries and four stays in hospital,’ Phoebe said, adding she was hoping to get a ‘final fusion’ to fix her ‘degenerative disc issue’ in 2019 before trying for another child with Sam.

The former journalist, 29, deals with ‘chronic pain’ as part of the long-term back issue, which she says stemmed from a skiing accident in her youth.

‘We planned to have them even closer but you have to listen to your body and go with what’s possible,’ she said at the time.

Phoebe waited 14 months after the birth of daughter Poppy Alice in January 2017 to fall pregnant with William.

Speaking further on her back issues, the blonde said: ‘We just wanted to get two in just in case anything should happen – which I’m sure it won’t but we just wanted to have two really close together.’

Despite the new addition to their family, there’s no denying 2018 was a difficult year for the couple, with Sam, 30, finding himself at the centre of a sexting scandal in September.

A close friend with knowledge of the couple’s situation apparently told The Daily Telegraph last week that ‘things have been bad for a while’.

‘They tried to keep it together but it all went to s**t, that’s the honest truth. It is pretty messy,’ the source claimed.

Sam and Phoebe, 29, first met at an Avicii concert in Sydney back in January 2014.

They kept their fledgling relationship a secret for eight months, before making their debut as a couple at the Dally M Awards in Sydney in September that year.

By June 2015, they were engaged following a romantic holiday in Greece.

They married in December 2015 at Phoebe’s parents’ home in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.
