Former NRL star Brett Finch has married his long term partner Elli Johnston only 18 months after checking out of a rehab clinic for drug and alcohol addiction.

The 36-year-old revealed after he checked out of the Thai clinic he worked as a stop-go man on the streets of Melbourne.

‘I was hoping no one would recognise me. It was the middle of the night about 40 minutes out of Melbourne. What chance anyone would see me? Only a few cars went by all night,’ the newly married man told The Daily Telegraph.

‘You wouldn’t believe it- the second car that drove past and the bloke calls out, ‘Hey, Finchy.’ He got me straight away. It was about 2am when I used to be in the nightclubs.

‘To me it wasn’t even about earning a wage. It was about keeping myself busy and I’ve never been afraid of hard work.’

On Saturday Finch married his partner of four years Elli Johnston at Greenfields Albert Park in Melbourne.

Present were Blues Origin coach Freddy Fittler, Australia’s Test captain Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Mitchell Pearce.

Finch said his life started falling apart in 2013 after retiring from a playing career spanning 14 years.

He is also celebrating a new two-year deal with Fox Sports as a presenter.
