Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says millennials like her believe ‘the world is gonna end in 12 YEARS’ if climate change is ignored at an event for MLK before ice cream chat with Colbert about ‘immoral’ billionaires

  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the freshman Congresswoman from New York’s 14th District
  • Self-described ‘Democratic socialist’ says that ‘the world is gonna end in 12 years’ if climate change is not addressed
  • She said American economic system was ‘immoral’ for ‘allowing billionaires to exist’ while ‘people get ringworm because they don’t have health care’
  • Later on Monday, she appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert
  • Colbert asked Ocasio-Cortez about her first three weeks in office while the two ate ice cream

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said on Monday that ‘the world is gonna end in 12 years’ if laws aren’t passed to address climate change and that it was ‘immoral’ for billionaires to exist in the same country where people struggled to make ends meet.

During an interview with journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates at Riverside Church in Manhattan on Monday, the New York Congresswoman said she and other millennials view climate change as ‘our World War II’

Coates invited Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic socialist, to the special forum honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

She also told Coates that it was ‘immoral’ how the American economic system ‘allows billionaires to exist.’

Ocasio-Cortez, 29, said: ‘I don’t think that necessarily means that all billionaires are immoral.

‘It is not to say that someone like Bill Gates, for example, or Warren Buffett are immoral people.

‘I do not believe that… but I do think a system that allows billionaires to exist when there are parts of Alabama where people are still getting ringworm because they don’t have access to public health is wrong.

‘I think that it’s wrong that a vast majority of the country does not make a living great wage.

‘I think it’s wrong that you can work 100 hours and not feed your kids.

‘I think it’s wrong that corporations like Walmart and Amazon can get paid, they can get paid by the government essentially, experience a wealth transfer from the public for paying people less than a minimum wage.’

Hours later, Ocasio-Cortez appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS.

The Congresswoman and the host both tucked into a tub of ice cream each and talked about her first three weeks in office.

Colbert showed an Instagram post showing Ocasio-Cortez coming home after an exhausting day of work and eating straight from a tub of ice cream.

So the host then decided to take out two tubs of a special brand of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream – Stephen Colbert’s AmeriCone Dream.

The Colbert-inspired flavor includes vanilla ice cream with fudge-covered waffle cone pieces and a caramel swirl.

The proceeds from the sale of the ice cream will go to charitable causes close to Colbert’s heart, including food and medical assistance for disadvantaged children, helping veterans and their families, and environmental causes.

‘AmeriCone Dream’ is a play on the phrase ‘American dream.’

Ocasio-Cortez is a freshman Congresswoman who shocked the political world by beating incumbent Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary for the 14th Congressional District, which takes up parts of Queens and the Bronx.

Since taking office, she has proven to be a hit on social media, amassing more than 2.5 million followers on Twitter while attracting huge audiences of Instagram users who watch her cook.

Ocasio-Cortez has also proposed legislative initiatives including raising taxes on the wealthy in order to fund a ‘Green New Deal’.
