Oregon ranchers forced to ‘debark’ Tibetan Mastiffs

Oregon Ranchers have been ordered to have their huge Tibetan mastiffs ‘debarked’ after losing a lawsuit, stated in a court ruling.

Dale and Debra Krein won a $238,900 case against neighbor Karen Szewc for having to put up with ‘a decade of ceaseless barking by the giant dogs,’ as reported by the Mail Tribune.

Dogs Squirt, Ronan, Kya and Trila all protect the sheep and goats at Liongate Fam from predators, including an increase in cougar spotting in the area.

But the court order last week deemed that the dogs were not fit to be ‘livestock guardians’ and demanded they be devocalized in 60 days.

Devocalization for dogs is illegal in Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania, and is only allowed when medically required.

Szewc, along with John Updegraff, run a farm and breed the dogs as an additional project. Both were named as defendants in the suit and have two months to have the procedure done.

The lawsuit against the defendants was filed in 2012 by the Kreins.

According to the Mail Tribune , the canines would routinely bark until 5am and throughout the day outside the property just 300 feet from the Kreins

The Kreins claimed their lives have been plagued by the noise since the defendants, John Updegraff and Karen Szewc, started breeding dogs in 2002.

According to the Mail Tribune, the canines would routinely bark until 5am and throughout the day outside the property just 300 feet from the Kreins.

This continued, they told the court, despite the fact that Updegraff and Szewc were cited by Jackson County Animal Control in 2002 and 2004 for violating public nuisance codes.

Animal activists with PETA call the process ‘a surgery for human convenience.’

‘Many veterinarians condemn this surgery and refuse to perform it because it produces postoperative pain. There’s not medical need for this to be done ever,’ PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt told the Daily News.

California and Rhode Island makes it illegal for landlords to demand the surgery as a requirement for allowing dogs to live at a residence, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.
