Perth police shoot driver of stolen vehicle

A father has been shot in the shoulder by a police officer in front of his two teenage children after he allegedly rammed a police car with a suspected stolen vehicle.

The man, a 31-year-old Aboriginal, is recovering in hospital following the shooting in Seville Grove, south east of Perth, shortly after 11am on Thursday.

He allegedly reversed a Subaru Impreza into the police car several times, causing damage to both vehicles, then maneuvered into a position to drive away, Nine News reported.

Before he was able to take off however, a police officer fired a bullet through the Subaru’s windscreen which impaled the attempted escapee in the shoulder.

The passenger in the front seat, a man in his 20s, fled on foot during the altercation but was chased down and arrested.

‘Police administered first aid and St John Ambulance attended, conveying the man to hospital for treatment,’ police said in a statement.

He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

His 17-year-old son reportedly ran to his grandmother’s nearby home, where his mother was at the time.

Mervyn Eades, from the Deaths in Custody Watch Commission WA, said the shooting would have a traumatic impact on the man’s children.

Neighbours recalled hearing a loud bang before seeing several police cars arrive at the scene, on Firetail Court.

Students at nearby school Cecil Andrews College were moved to areas furthest from the incident and parents were sent a text telling them their children were safe.

‘An incident has occurred outside of school. Police are involved no threat to students. Firetail Court Seville Grove closed. Cecil Andrews College,’ the message read.

The shooting is under investigation from the homicide squad and internal affairs unit.

‘There’s a crime scene to be examined. There’s forensic evidence in that crime scene that I can’t go into here and I won’t speculate upon the relevance of that evidence,’ Inspector Inspector Geoff Desanges said.

‘That will be conducted by the homicide squad and they’ll piece it together and we’ll work out what happened.’

Officers involved in the incident will tested for drugs and alcohol.
