Peter Kay’s Car Share: Comedian doesn’t rule out hit comedy returning

They will return as car-sharing colleagues John and Kayleigh for the final episode of Car Share next week.

And Peter Kay has described his shock at the reaction to the end of the second series, when viewers didn’t get the romantic ending to the love story they had hoped for.

In an interview with the Radio Times, the comedian, 44, talked about the upcoming grande finale and plans for his new show, while his co-star Sian Gibson didn’t rule out the hit comedy returning.

Surprised: Peter Kay has described his shock at the reaction to the end of the second series, when viewers didn’t get the romantic ending to the love story they had hoped for

He told the publication: ‘We always knew the second series would end that way and we thought people might be a bit miffed, but never thought they would be so devastated.

‘We decided to write another episode that hopefully gave the characters a resolve.’

Speaking about the finale, Sian said: ‘I’ll miss all the fun we have filming, but as I see Peter all the time, it doesn’t feel like they’ve gone away.’

To which, Peter added: ‘I won’t miss John and Kayleigh… we’re right here.’

Hinting the show could return Sian teased, she would ‘never say never’, with Peter saying the pair would ‘hopefully’ work together again.

Meanwhile, the Bolton funnyman hinted plans at his next venture, as he praised editor of the series, Matt Brown.

Saying he would ‘miss working with him until the next project’, Peter remained coy over what it would be, with Sian commenting ‘that would be telling’.

At the end of the second series, Kayleigh got out of John’s car and walked away after he failed to reply to her declaration of love for him – not giving fans the romantic ending they had hoped for.

Earlier this month, fans criticised the special adlibbed episode of his popular sitcom as ‘cruel’ after the comedian mocked a transsexual woman.

The characters grimaced and giggled at a story on their car radio about a woman who discovers her boyfriend is a ‘closet transsexual’.

During the unscripted episode of the Bafta-winning BBC1 show – about two colleagues in a company car-sharing scheme – they pulled faces as the radio announcer told how the woman came home to find her partner, Gordon, dressed as a woman.

He is then beaten up by thugs and ends up in hospital because ‘he couldn’t outrun them in high heels’.

John shrugged dismissively and laughed, before suggesting the accompanying song request of More Than A Woman was a joke.

Angry viewers said the ad-libbed clip, which was watched by 4.4million people, was ‘ignorant’ and ‘misjudged’.

One fan tweeted: ‘Tonight’s episode just felt outdated and cruel.’ A second said: ‘I’m a massive fan of Car Share, but the unscripted show just didn’t work.

‘The cheap gag at the expense of trans people was ill judged and tainted the brilliant previous episodes. Shame.’

The BBC declined to comment at the time.

In the final installment to air on Bank Holiday Monday, viewers will finally learn what happens in the delicious slow-burn romance of the unlikely Romeo, Bolton supermarket assistant manager John, and his Juliet, promotions rep.

Despite its success, Peter admitted he wasn’t sure anyone would want to watch it when they began on the venture.

‘I worried viewers may not have the patience to stay with a simple idea of two people commuting,’ he admitted. ‘Especially when they have so many other things to watch.’

Peter Kay’s Car Share began without any fanfare on BBC iPlayer in 2015.

In 2016, the show won two BAFTAs, and it won a National Television Award that year and again this year.

The show’s return was highly anticipated after Kay cancelled his live tour due to ‘unforeseen family circumstances’ in December.

The surprise announcement shocked the 1.7million people across Britain and Ireland who managed to get hold of tickets to see the comedian.

He said in a statement the cancellation was due to ‘unforeseen family circumstances’, adding: ‘This decision has not been taken lightly and I’m sure you’ll understand my family must always come first.’

Peter Kay’s Car Share Unscripted will air on BBC One at 10pm on Monday May 28.
