Pochettino ‘so happy’ after Tottenham beat Dortmund

Tottenham finally looked to put their Wembley woes behind them with an impressive 3-1 win over a dangerous Borussia Dortmund side.

The win gives Spurs three points in their first Champions League Group tie but manager Mauricio Pochettino says victory means so much more.

The Tottenham boss was also pleased with Harry Kane’s contribution with the striker continuing his good form with a brace.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino says Champions League win means more than three points

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Pochettino said: ‘It was so important, we are so happy. I think it was such an important victory to start this way.

‘It was a tough game, the first half was so open, and they dominated with more ball, they’re a very good team. But in the second half we played better, and we created more chances than them.’

Spurs were playing at their temporary home Wembley, where they had failed to win a game this season.

‘It’s always hard to start the new competition, and a lot has happened around the team, which is why I think this is more than just three points tonight,’ Pochettino added.

‘It’s true that we fixed some things (at half-time), some problems and we modified the position of some players and I think the tempo decreased. I think it was better for us, and we had more of the ball.’

Their win over Dortmund was even more important when you consider they also share the group with Real Madrid.

Many have the Spanish side as favourites to top the group, meaning passage into the knock-out rounds is likely to be between them and Dortmund.

‘Dortmund is a very aggressive team, with the ball they are dynamic and we struggled a little bit to have the first pass quick in possession but sometimes you cannot dominate games and must know to play in a different way.

‘I think the team is more mature, and we showed different strengths.’

Spurs were without Dele Alli through suspension so even more pressure was on Harry Kane to deliver.

And deliver he did. The striker scored a brace to add to Son Heung-min’s opener which was enough to see off the Bundesliga outfit.

‘I think Harry was fantastic. I think the performance of the team was good in terms of being aggressive, fighting and working, we were solid and we didn’t concede too many chances for Dortmund,’ said Spurs’ manager.

‘I thought Harry and Son were fantastic.’
