Pochettino wants Tottenham to be ‘brave and aggressive’

Mauricio Pochettino promised not to sacrifice Tottenham’s natural sense of adventure as they tackle Juventus in the Champions League.

The Italian giants have reached the final of the competition for two of the last three years and have won the Serie A title six times in a row.

Spurs are back at this stage of the Champions League for the first time since 2011 when they were beaten by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

‘It’s about beliefs,’ said Pochettino. ‘You cannot change the sense of the team. The team plays with one system, another system, with different names, but the team always keeps the same principles.

‘We are going to be aggressive, we are going to be brave, we are going to try to win but always with massive respect to the opponent.

‘For me, it is a game to enjoy because at the start of my career at Espanyol my dream was to play Champions League – and to play Champions League in this type of circumstance, against a team like Juventus here in Turin.

‘It is an exciting moment for us. We want to enjoy it and we want to play with freedom, with clear ideas, but of course football is about being responsible.’

Spurs have taken confidence from victories in the group stage against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

Pochettino added: ‘When the draw happened from the beginning of the season, get two candidates in our group stage was first Real Madrid and then Borussia Dortmund. And I think not too many people believed in us, and the possibility to move to the next stage.

‘We won the Group stage, and now we are here, enjoying today, enjoying the training session, enjoying tomorrow about the game.

‘But we need to show what we deserve to go to the next stage. We need to play well and score goals.

‘It will be difficult against a team that is so tough to score against, and for us there are many challenges that we have ahead tomorrow, but it is so important to be competitive, and keep going in the way we are playing.

‘Manchester United is a good example. Liverpool or the derby against Arsenal, the team performance was fantastic. Why not repeat the same performance tomorrow?’
