Police hunting for schoolboy find a body in a field

Daniel Chambers, 15, had been missing from his home in Tipton St John, south Devon since Wednesday morning 

Police searching for a teenage boy have found a body in a field after trawling a local river.

Daniel Chambers, 15, vanished from his home in Tipton St John, south Devon on Wednesday morning.

Police today found his body in field four miles from his home.

Detectives are investigating his death but do not think it is suspicious. 

Daniel was last seen by his parents leaving his home to go to school at 7.30am – but was not seen getting on to his usual 8.15am school bus. 

Formal identification of the body is yet to take place but his family has been told. 

The news emerged after police announced they were searching in and around a river as concern mounted for the missing schoolboy.

His mobile phone was last tracked at around 2.30pm on Wednesday some four miles from where he lives in Tipton St John, Devon.

And his anxious sister Melissa has written in a public Facebook post that Daniel’s disappearance is ‘extremely unlike him’.

She wrote: ‘As some of you know my brother Daniel has gone missing in the South Devon area. It’s extremely unlike him and he would never do this sort of thing.

‘It’s thought that he travelled into Sidmouth or Ottery St. Mary, by either walking or catching the 382 bus.

Daniel is described as white, approx. 6ft tall, of a slim build, with short dark brown hair and is clean shaven. He was last seen wearing dark coloured chinos and a grey hoodie with horizontal stripes on the back

‘He could have also walked to Newton Poppleford. His phone location was last tracked near Sidmouth at 2:30pm on Wednesday 13th December.

‘Daniel is 6’1, has brown hair and eyes. We believe that he’s wearing a black bomber jacket with black chinos.’

At a police press conference on Friday about Daniel’s disappearance, DCI Stuart Cavin said that searches had been extended to include in and around the River Otter.

He said: ‘We are appealing to people who know and use the walkways around the River Otter, particularly between Tipton St John up to Ottery St Mary.

‘We know that Daniel used this area and we think he may well have been seen by many walkers and other members of the public who use these paths.

‘Daniel usually catches the bus to school from the Golden Lion in Tipton St.. John at approximately 8.15am to attend school but was not seen getting onto the bus.

‘It is believed he likes to frequently visit Sidmouth and Beer.’

DCI Cavin added that Daniel is described as white, approx. six foot tall, of a slim build, with short dark brown hair and clean shaven.

He said: ‘It is believed he was wearing dark coloured chinos, black suede shoes, grey hoodie and a M&S dark coloured bomber jacket.

‘He was carrying a black rucksack with a green coloured DC Logo.’

A Devon and Cornwall police statement today read: ‘Police searching for missing Tipton St John teenager Daniel Chambers, 15, have located the body of a male today [16 December].

The body was found in a field near Tipton St John around 11.35am during a police search for Daniel who was last seen on Wednesday morning [13 December].

Formal identification is yet to be carried out but Daniel’s family has been informed.

Officers are carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances of the death but it is not being treated as suspicious at this time.’
