Pregnant mom passes out behind wheel with infant in car

A pregnant Indiana mother stalled traffic when she passed out while driving after shooting up heroin.

Police say they responded to the incident located at the intersection of North Governor and East Columbia Street in Evansville late Monday night where Natalie Onay, 22, was found unconscious.

Onay admitted she injected the drug about 10 minutes before she became unalert, according to local Fox 59.

Her 10-month-old baby was found in the backseat, unharmed, and was taken into custody by the Department of Child Services. The mother was arrested.

A driver behind her who witnessed the events say the five-months pregnant Onay ‘did not move’ as the traffic light ‘cycled at least twice,’ the newspaper reported.

Then, the family vehicle ‘rolled forward, stopped, and was nearly hit by another car’ after the driver honked for her to move.

Onay was still passed out when officers arrived to the scene and had to remove her from the car.

They found drug paraphernalia and as .10 grams grams of heroin inside.

According to TristateHompage.com, Onay had been using the drug for years prior and told police she was clean before her relapse.

Onay has been charged with child neglect, possession of a narcotic, possession of paraphernalia and driving while intoxicated.

In 2016, the coroner’s office in Evansville’s Vanderburgh County worked 50 fatal drug overdoses, according to Courier & Press report.

Now, Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear told the newspaper the epidemic has gotten even worse.

‘We’re way up. We were past the 50th at the beginning of November,’ Lockyear said.

As of last Tuesday, the coroner’s office had ’65 confirmed fatal drug overdoses,’ which included ’24 heroin or fentanyl’ while the remainder were other opiates and ‘covered everything from cocaine to K2 to helium,’ the report said.

Sadly, Onay said it’s only a matter of time before the numbers rise again.

‘I would say that we’ll hit, at least, 70 this year … ‘At the rate it’s going, I’d be naive to think we won’t.’
