A Catholic priest is believed to have killed himself after he was accused of sexually abusing a young girl. 

Father Joseph Tran, 49, was found dead by police on Thursday, hours after officers launched an investigation into the allegations.   

He was accused of sexually abusing a young girl, now 13 years old, over a period of several years. 

The child’s mother is said to have confronted Father Joseph this week after the accusations surfaced, the West Australian reported.

Father Joseph was a well-known and popular priest who worked as a chaplain in a number of Perth schools, according to The West Australian. 

The publication also said he had been a priest for 15 years at Armadale’s St Francis Xavier at Whitfords Parish.
